DARLINGTON, SC — September 1, 1951: After qualifying seventh fastest of the 66 drivers entered in the Southern 500 NASCAR Cup race at Darlington Raceway, Glen “Fireball” Roberts pits his Ed Saverance-owned 1951 Ford with engine problems on lap 174. The problem was terminal and Roberts was scored in 49th position for the finish.
